‘Expendable’ wins 2025 Best Stage Production award

A play which delved into the child sexual exploitation scandals that rocked communities was named Best Stage Production at the Asian Media Awards.

Journalists and filmmakers joined content creators and actors at the 13th ceremony in Manchester.

The awards celebrate achievements in a range of categories in journalism, investigations, TV, radio, stage, online and creative media.

The ceremony is supported by the University of Salford and took place at The Manchester Deansgate Hotel on Friday (October 31).

Royal Court Theatre’s ‘Expendable’ was written by Emteaz Hussain and directed by Esther Richardson. It features Maya Bartley, Avita Jay, Lena Kaur, Gurjeet Singh and Humera Syed.

The 2025 AMA finalist list featured some of the most engaging and entertaining productions and musicals.

Speaking on stage at the ceremony Emteaz Hussain said: “I am speechless I did not expect that.

“Thank you Asian Media Awards. I did not expect it with such a stellar line up.

“We worked so hard to get a production on. Against all the odds and diminishing funds.”

Two sisters grapple with the impact on their community as the men around them are embroiled sexually abuse scandal that rocked northern towns in the 1990s and 2010s.

Expendable spotlights the often-overlooked voices of Pakistani women, delving into the shortcomings of law enforcement, politicians, and the media.

Lena Kaur is a powerful presence as Yasmin, rallying against the strictures of the Muslim community elders as Avita Jay portrays Zara who is too frightened to even answer the door after a local Muslim man is killed in a case of mistaken identity.
