Rena Annobil picked up the Best Radio Show honour at the Asian Media Awards

Journalists and filmmakers joined content creators and actors at the 13th ceremony in Manchester.

The awards celebrate achievements in a range of categories in journalism, investigations, TV, radio, stage, online and creative media.

The ceremony is supported by the University of Salford and took place at The Manchester Deansgate Hotel on Friday (October 31). It follows a shortlist announcement which was held at BBC Broadcasting House in London.

Presenting the award this year were music legends H-Dhami and Rishi Rich.

Rena said: “To be in a room full of creative excellence and win the award for Best Radio Show was a huge honour….and a real surprise.

“It’s taken me a while to get to this point, but I absolutely love what I do and it was a proud moment to represent the wonderful and unique world of BBC local radio at a national level.”

Rena Annobil’s show is broadcasted every week on six different BBC local radio stations across the South of England – BBC Radio Berkshire, BBC Radio Oxford, BBC Radio Solent, BBC Radio Kent, BBC Radio Surrey and BBC Radio Sussex.

Rena’s radio show celebrates South Asian culture, arts and music, and highlights trailblazers in the community.

The show aims to create an inclusive space where the local South Asian community feels seen, heard and celebrated, and those who are not South Asian also feel welcome.

It covers events across the South of England and Rena has featured the likes of Dr Rangan Chatterjee, Dr Rupy Aujla, Apache Indian, Anoushka Shankar, EastEnders actress Bal Sopal, and musician Kuljit Bhamra.

The playlist is also varied and includes a new everything from Bollywood hits to music from the Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam film industries. Rena produces and presents the show herself and now also hosts her own podcast ‘The Lifestyle Prescription’.
