Asian Standard Wins Best Publication Award 2022

A news title which is looking to ‘buck the trend’ and print further printed editions, Asian Standard picked up the Best Publication Award at the 10TH Asian Media Awards.

The 2022 awards celebrated the achievements of journalists, broadcasters and leading creative industry professionals.

The ceremony hosted by Sky Sports News presenter Bela Shah saw special awards for LBC News host Lisa Aziz, BBC 5 Live broadcaster Nihal Arthanayake and acclaimed TV and stage actor Kulvinder Ghir of Goodness Gracious Me fame.

The Asian Media Awards Best Publication / Website award is supported by digital agency Cleartwo. The award was presented at the ceremony by director Omer Riaz.

During a period when newspapers have seen a decline in readership, Asian Standard took the brave decision to launch new localised editions.  What started off as just a Bradford title, is now available in other regions including Kirklees, the North East and Leeds.

Editor Fatima Patel said: “Asian Standard is a relatively new regional newspaper title mainly platforming the South Asian community. But we are aiming to reach out to the wider community, so that people can learn a bit more about the Asian community that they live with.

“I am absolutely elated especially as our fifth title our fifth title is due to be launched in Manchester. So it is really special.

“It comes as it is nine years since I was hospitalised and I nearly gave up on my publication when I was met with that very serious illness.”

As a free weekly title Asian Standard aims to offer news, views and opinions that have been overlooked by mainstream news outlets supporting businesses and charitable campaigns.

The news title has plans to launch into Manchester by the end of 2022, which, it says, will make one of the largest Asian weekly print titles in the UK.

Headed by a small and dedicated team the title has also looked to grow its online and social media audiences during the period.

The 2022 awards honoured journalism, online, radio, TV, creative media, stage, theatre and live events in 23 categories and was back at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate where the first awards took place in 2013.
