MMU & Routes into Languages Journalist of the Year Award

The highly sought after AMA Journalist of the Year category will be supported by Manchester Metropolitan University and Routes into Languages North West.

The Journalist of the Year accolade is awarded to an individual who has made a lasting impression with a series of reports on TV, radio, print and online. He or she is also an individual whose talent and drive has also helped to inspire others within the media industry.

In previous years the award has attracted some of the UK’s most foremost journalists, writers and broadcasters in their field.

In 2015 the BBC’s Kavita Puri was presented with the award heading a shortlist which included, Secunder Kermani (Reporter, BBC Newsnight); Dipesh Gadher, (Chief Investigative Reporter, The Sunday Times); Dharmesh Sheth (Reporter, Sky Sports); Nelufar Hedayat (Journalist, Channel Four) and Shabnam Mahmood (Senior Broadcast Journalist, BBC Asian Network).

Sharon Handley, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Languages and Social Science at Manchester Metropolitan University said: “We are pleased to sponsor the Journalist of the Year category at the Asian Media Awards for the fourth year running.

Routes into Languages Project Manager, Yasmin Hussain said, “The sponsorship demonstrates our support for raising the profile of journalism to produce future talented journalists.

“Both the faculty of Humanities, Languages and Social Science and Routes into Languages NW are committed to raising educational attainment and achievement of pupils across the region.”

The ceremony returns to the Manchester Hilton Deansgate for the fourth year. The hotel is housed in the 47-story iconic Beetham Tower which is the city’s most distinctive skyscraper attracting visitors from across the world.

The 2016 AMA awards ceremony will take place on Thursday 27 October at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate with the official shortlist announcement being held at ITV, the London Studios on Monday 19 September.

Previous AMA recipients have included, amongst others, Ranvir Singh, Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Mehdi Hasan, Waris Hussein and Nina Wadia.

The University of Salford are premier sponsors to the 2016 events and partners include ITV, MediaCom, Press Association Training and the Manchester Evening News.
